Picked clients up at Marina at 8:30 and headed to areas I had "scouted"
earlier. My clients were a 77 yr. old retired Col. & pastor and his son who
had just graduated w/ his masters from Univ. of Minn. Started day fishing
a cove I had found w/ some pre-spawn and spawning fish. I let the son
drive the trolling motor while I set his dad up. The son wanted to fish artificial
and his dad wanted to fish live minnows. I should not have let the son drive
the boat because the boat get up on top of the fish. The fish spooked out of
there beds and we moved to different area. At second area we rebaited and
I headed down bank close enough to cast to bank. After going down bank
after 5 mins. the father hooked a nice Bass(3.5 lbs.) on the large minnow
Shortly after that about 50 feet down the bank "Dad" caught another Bass
(2.12 lbs.). I decided to try a different area after we finished fishing this area.
Fished new area for about 15 mins. when "Dad" caught another Bass(1.34 lbs.)
Son was feeling bad about getting skunked so we tried new area for some Crappie.
Pulled in cove and started fishing to beaver hut I had targeted. Once on beaver hut
the son caught several small Bluegill. It seemed Crappie might be deeper so I moved
boat out deeper on hut. Within 5 mins. the son had caught a couple of nice Crappie.
It was time to head in so, we packed up and headed back. Not too bad a day for 5
hr. trip. I was honored to be in the boat w/ a retired Col. who had served in Korea
and Vietnam. Our military people don't get the credit and respect they deserve for
what they do to protect our country. Good fishing!
